August 14, 2023
Visit here on 8/21 to see our Fall topics and a full schedule of events for 2023! TENEO will begin meeting on Monday nights, at our usual time of 6:30pm, beginning September 11.

July 13, 2023

Our usual meeting place at the Birtell household has suffered significant water damage due to a broken water pipe. As a result, we are unable to host our meetings there for the time being. Moving forward, we will be organizing our meetings at various locations, and we kindly request that you check our website for updates on the venues for these events.

Unfortunately, due to the circumstances, our interview with Marcus Rediker, scheduled for 7/23, has been canceled. However, we are pleased to announce that our book club events over the summer will resume with the discussion on "Jesus and John Wayne" on 7/30. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to continuing our engaging discussions in the new settings.

Additionally, Fall gatherings will resume in September and will be moved to Monday nights. More info coming soon.

May 21, 2023
We have ended our regular sessions for the Spring period and are moving onto our summer book readings. Each Summer three books are chosen to read as a group and spend a session discussing. Join us for a book study! These gatherings are typically held once a month. Regular sessions will resume in the Fall.

You don't have a book? No problem! You can order a copy from us for just $5 here.

Summer 2023 TENEO Gatherings:

6/11/2023 - Book Study: "The Fearless Benjamin Lay" by Marcus Rediker

Picture
We recently read through "Rebecca's Revival" by Jon Sensbach and he gave us this wonderful recommendation during our interview with him.
  • Brief description: In The Fearless Benjamin Lay, renowned historian Marcus Rediker chronicles the transatlantic life and times of a singular man—a Quaker dwarf who demanded the total, unconditional emancipation of all enslaved Africans around the world. Mocked and scorned by his contemporaries, Lay was unflinching in his opposition to slavery, often performing colorful guerrilla theater to shame slave masters, insisting that human bondage violated the fundamental principles of Christianity. He drew on his ideals to create a revolutionary way of life, one that embodied the proclamation “no justice, no peace.” Read more.

7/23/2023 - Interview: Marcus Rediker, historian and author of "The Fearless Benjamin Lay"

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Marcus Rediker was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1951, to Buford and Faye Rediker, the first of their two sons. His family has roots in the mines and factories of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia; he grew up in Nashville and Richmond. He attended Vanderbilt University, dropped out of school and worked in a factory for three years, and graduated with a B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1976. He went to the University of Pennsylvania for graduate study, earning an M.A. and Ph.D. in history.
Marcus taught at Georgetown University from 1982 to 1994, lived in Moscow for a year (1984-5), and is currently Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburgh.  He has, over the years, been active in a variety of social justice and peace movements, including the worldwide campaign to abolish the death penalty.

7/30/2023 - Book Study: "Jesus and John Wayne" by Kristin Kobes Du Mez

Picture
This is an atypical read for our group. This was chosen as a strong discussion piece. Many of our group members have not been exposed to the liberal Christian movement and this book will prove to be very informative. It is important to read books we both agree and disagree with.
  • Brief description:  Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping, revisionist history of the last seventy-five years of white evangelicalism, revealing how evangelicals have worked to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism―or in the words of one modern chaplain, with “a spiritual badass.” Read more.

8/20/2023 - Book Study: "Knowing God" by J.I. Packer

Picture
Knowing God is a classic in Christian circles. We chose this book to ground us in solid theological ideas following the cultural study in July.
  • Brief description: Stemming from Packer's profound theological knowledge, Knowing God brings together two key facets of the Christian faith―knowing about God and knowing God through a close relationship with Jesus Christ. Written in an engaging and practical tone, this thought-provoking work seeks to renew and enrich our understanding of God. Read more.
