Who are we?

Picture

Randall Birtell
Director, Founder of TENEO

Randall married Rovonne in 1988 and they are the parents of six children. He has worked in the Information Technology field for over 35 years. He has taught high school and adult Sunday school classes, started a Ratio Christi ministry at Washburn University, and is the Associate Director for Ratio Christi at Kansas State University. He has a B. S. Mathematics Secondary Education from Kansas State University (1988) and a M. Min. in Apologetics from Southern Evangelical Seminary (2005). Randall attends Topeka Bible Church and currently teaches an adult Sunday school class.

"I want to 'Know God'. Inspired by J. I. Packer's book by that title, to know God intellectually and relationally better every day is my aim. TENEO has helped me do that by having my ideas about God and his world sharpened by others in the context of community that moves me to want to worship Him in spirit and in Truth."

Ryan Scott
Assistant Director

Ryan has been a member of TENEO since 2018. As assistant director, he maintains the website and other network functions, organizes the Book Studies, and spends time reaching out to the broader Topeka community on behalf of TENEO. Ryan is married and has two young daughters and is involved with Fellowship Bible Church in Topeka. He is currently a graduate student at KU completing a PhD in Physics. He holds a M.S. in Computational Physics, and a B.S. in both Physics (2016) and Secondary Education (2016). When not directly involved with TENEO, Ryan enjoys spending time with his family, cooking and baking, exploring the nature trails around Topeka, and playing games around the table with friends.

"Our community needs a place for those who seek a more rational Christianity. I hope that TENEO can be that outlet. This is something I needed and would have loved to be a part of as a teenager exploring my own beliefs. My goal is to reach out to doubting Christians and bring them to a place where they can safely express difficult questions."

Endorsements

"TENEO is a space that promotes curiosity and encourages dialogue around important issues of faith, philosophy, science, culture, and other topics facing the modern world. During a time of faith deconstruction in my own life, TENEO was the single greatest factor for me to stay within the Christian faith as I was able to examine my questions and doubts in a space that respected and encouraged intellectual curiosity while always pursuing the truth." - John

"I found the group in my very first year as a college student, and it has been one of the most anchoring and challenging things in my life for the near decade since then. I was thrilled to find a place to be honest about my doubts, be encouraged to question and wrestle with my faith in community, and to grow in my understanding of others’ perspectives and engage them meaningfully and thoughtfully—something I have been hard-pressed to find in many other places.
TENEO has been a refuge of thought-provoking discussion, mutual respect in disagreement, and a wealth of training in apologetic, evangelistic, philosophical, and theological topics. I am especially proud many women have engaged in TENEO gatherings, and I am deeply grateful to commune with a group that truly values every voice. TENEO strives to encourage growth and understanding of God, and I have treasured watching the group, formed from diverse denominational backgrounds, grow and adapt over the years." - Abby

"TENEO is a place where people gather to discuss difficult, and sometimes controversial, topics from the perspective of Christianity in a thoughtful and graceful way. The things I like about TENEO are the diverse selection of topics we cover and most importantly the people. Sharing, and sometimes disagreeing with the ideas of others, within the context of community teaches me to respect and learn from others. It is a safe place to explore and test ideas and ultimately know God and His world better." - Randall

"I had been searching for something like TENEO for many years prior to joining. It had been a goal of mine to find or provide a place for Christians and non-Christians to come alongside each other and discuss serious topics in open and honest ways. I've been a member for many years now and it has consistently been a highlight of my week. I particularly enjoy having conversations with people from all different walks of life and hearing different perspectives on issues that are well thought out, especially if they are counter to my own. I believe that engaging with the challenges to our beliefs will ultimately lead us toward truth." - Ryan
