Summer 2024 TENEO Gatherings:
This summer, we have chosen to read and discuss "The Everlasting Man" by G.K. Chesterton. This is the book that inspired C.S. Lewis to leave his atheism behind and was a common recommendation by J.R.R. Tolkien. Please sign up for a $5 copy provided by TENEO.
The conception of this book was as a response to Chesterton's good friend H.G. Wells with his book "The Outline of History". You can find a summary of this book here, written by Ryan Haller.

6/10/2024 - The Everlasting Man - Introduction + Part 1, Chapters 1 & 2
Description:
We will kick off our discussion of "The Everlasting Man" with the Introduction and the first two chapters. In these chapters, Chesterton argues that modern skepticism fails to appreciate the profound mystery of humanity's spiritual history, highlighting the unique consciousness and creativity of humans through prehistoric art, and critiquing scientific theories that diminish the spiritual significance of human distinctiveness.
We plan to share dinner together (traditional Persian cuisine) for this evening, beginning at 6:30. This is optional. If you would like to join for dinner, be sure to RSVP by Saturday 6/8 to ensure we have enough food. If dinner is popular, we may relocate to Randall's house.
RSVP
Event Info:
Location: Scott Household (101 NW Broadmoor Ave., Topeka, KS 66606)
Time: 6:30 doors open, ~7:00 session begins (after dinner)

6/24/2024 - The Everlasting Man - Part 1, Chapters 3 & 4
Description:
In chapters 3 and 4 of "The Everlasting Man," Chesterton argues that civilization emerged suddenly in an advanced state rather than gradually from barbarism, and explores how the world's religions and myths reflect humanity's inherent longing for God, ultimately pointing towards the truths fulfilled in Christianity.
If you are racing to finish this, prioritize chapter 4! In this chapter, Chesterton lays out his thesis for the rest of the book and will be the focus of our conversation.

7/22/2024 - The Everlasting Man - Part 1, Chapters 5-8
Description:
In the last chapters of Part 1 of "The Everlasting Man," Chesterton explores how ancient myths express deep spiritual truths and how Greek philosophy, despite its rationality, couldn't fully satisfy human spiritual needs. He describes the spiritual confusion in the pagan world and the decline of paganism's influence. Chesterton argues that this turmoil prepared the way for Christianity, which uniquely fulfilled humanity's deepest spiritual longings.
